RESUMO

An 8-year-old neutered male shih tzu dog underwent laparotomy for cystolithectomy. Ten days later, multiple various-sized cystic nodules were observed on the suture line and surrounding abdominal skin, although the surgical incision had healed well. Microscopically, various-sized cysts lined with thin walls of stratified squamous epithelium in the dermis were dilated and filled with keratin. Adnexal differentiation from the wall was not seen. Thus, the abdominal lesions were diagnosed as comedones and epidermal cysts. Herein, we describe the case of a dog with comedones and epidermal cysts on the abdominal skin after a laparotomy. Key clinical message: Multiple various-sized cystic lesions of the follicles are described. The implantation of epidermal fragments into the dermis by surgery may induce epidermal cysts and comedones in the skin of hyperadrenocorticism-affected dogs.


Comédons et kystes épidermiques sur la peau abdominale d'un chien survenant après une laparotomie. Un chien shih tzu mâle castré de 8 ans a subi une laparotomie pour cystolithectomie. Dix jours plus tard, de multiples nodules kystiques de différentes tailles ont été observés sur la ligne de suture et sur la peau abdominale environnante, bien que l'incision chirurgicale ait bien cicatrisé. Au microscope, des kystes de différentes tailles bordés de fines parois d'épithélium pavimenteux stratifié dans le derme étaient dilatés et remplis de kératine. Aucune différenciation annexielle par rapport à la paroi n'a été observée. Ainsi, les lésions abdominales ont été diagnostiquées comme des comédons et des kystes épidermiques. Nous décrivons ici le cas d'un chien présentant des comédons et des kystes épidermiques sur la peau abdominale après une laparotomie.Message clinique clé:De multiples lésions kystiques des follicules, de différentes tailles, sont décrites. L'implantation chirurgicale de fragments d'épiderme dans le derme peut provoquer des kystes épidermiques et des comédons dans la peau des chiens atteints d'hypercorticisme.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Background: Effective treatment for canine oral malignant melanoma (e.g., curative-intent surgery) may not be feasible or radiation therapy may be unavailable. However, chemotherapy is usually an option, and more information is needed regarding its use without adequate local treatments. Objective: Our objective was to investigate the efficacy of chemotherapy in canine oral malignant melanoma without adequate local control, using carboplatin with dose reduction in small-breed dogs and metronomic chemotherapy. Animals and procedure: Client-owned dogs with histopathologically diagnosed oral malignant melanoma were retrospectively enrolled from 2016 to 2022. The chemotherapy protocol in each case was determined by the attending clinician. Results: Thirteen dogs were included. The median progression-free interval of all 13 dogs was 42 d (14 to 953 d). The median overall survival time of dogs with chemotherapy as their only systemic treatment was 181 d (50 to 960 d; n = 11). The median dosage of carboplatin was 250 mg/m2. Response to treatment and clinical stage were significant prognostic factors. Conclusion and clinical relevance: As chemotherapy provided a median survival of 6 mo, it could be considered when adequate local control is infeasible. Earlier clinical stages or achievement of at least stable disease during chemotherapy may indicate better survival in dogs.


Une étude rétrospective de l'effet chimiothérapeutique sur le mélanome malin buccal canin dépourvu de chirurgie et de radiothérapie á large marge : le stade clinique et la réponse au traitement prédisent les résultats du patient. Mise en contexte: Des traitements efficaces pour le mélanome malin oral canin, tels que la chirurgie á visée curative, ne sont parfois pas réalisables ou la radiothérapie n'est pas disponible dans certaines régions. La chimiothérapie reste une option de traitement et davantage d'informations devraient être fournies pour les cas qui n'ont pas eu accés á un traitement local adéquat. Objectif: Cette étude visait á étudier l'efficacité de la chimiothérapie dans le mélanome malin oral canin sans contrôle local adéquat, en utilisant le carboplatine avec réduction de dose chez les chiens de petite race et la chimiothérapie métronomique. Animaux et procédure: Treize chiens appartenant á des clients atteints d'un mélanome malin oral diagnostiqué par histopathologie ont été rétrospectivement inscrits de 2016 á 2022. Le protocole de chimiothérapie a été déterminé par le clinicien traitant. Résultats: L'intervalle médian sans progression des treize chiens était de 42 jours (14­953 jours). La durée médiane de survie globale des chiens ayant reçu une chimiothérapie comme seul traitement systémique était de 181 jours (50­960 jours; n = 11). La dose médiane de carboplatine était de 250 mg/m2. La réponse au traitement et le stade clinique étaient des facteurs pronostiques importants. Conclusion et pertinence clinique: La chimiothérapie pouvait encore être envisagée lorsqu'un contrôle local adéquat était impossible. Des stades cliniques plus précoces ou des patients atteignant au moins une maladie stable pendant la chimiothérapie peuvent indiquer une meilleure survie.(Traduit par les auteurs).

A 14-year-old intact male Chihuahua dog was presented with masses located between the biceps femoris and adductor muscles in both hind limbs. Based on histopathological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural findings, we diagnosed these masses as bilateral hibernomas in the femoral regions. The dog had no evidence of recurrence or metastasis of the hibernomas through a 4-month postoperative follow-up. This is apparently the first report of bilateral hibernomas in the femoral regions of a dog. Key clinical message: Bilateral hibernomas should be considered as a differential diagnosis for masses occurring in the femoral regions of dogs.


Hibernomes bilatéraux dans les régions fémorales d'un chien. Un chien Chihuahua mâle intact de 14 ans a été présenté avec des masses situées entre le biceps fémoral et les muscles adducteurs des deux membres postérieurs. Sur la base des résultats histopathologiques, immunohistochimiques et ultrastructuraux, nous avons diagnostiqué ces masses comme des hibernomes bilatéraux dans les régions fémorales. Le chien n'avait aucun signe de récidive ou de métastases des hibernomes au cours d'un suivi postopératoire de 4 mois. Il s'agit apparemment du premier rapport d'hibernome bilatéral dans les régions fémorales d'un chien.Message clinique clé:Les hibernomes bilatéraux doivent être considérés comme un diagnostic différentiel pour les masses survenant dans les régions fémorales des chiens.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

INTRODUCTION: This case report describes the long-term success of a subcutaneous ureteral bypass device in a dog for treatment of a ureteral obstruction. The suspected xanthine urolithiasis was secondary to treatment with allopurinol for leishmaniasis. The dog presented initially with lethargy, anuria and abdominal pain. Mild azotemia was found on biochemical analysis and abdominal ultrasound revealed bilateral ureteral obstruction. A subcutaneous ureteral bypass was subsequently placed using a standard surgical technique. The dog recovered uneventfully and the azotemia resolved within days. Follow-up examinations were performed every trimester for over three years and no complications like obstruction of the bypass tubes, urinary tract infection or azotemia were recognized during this follow-up period. Allopurinol was replaced with domperidone as long-term treatment against Leishmaniasis which resulted in a mild increase of the leishmania serum antibody titer. The subcutaneous ureteral bypass placement was successful and safe in this dog and is a valuable alternative in cases of ureteral obstruction also in dogs.


INTRODUCTION: Ce rapport de cas décrit le succès à long terme d'une dérivation urétérale sous-cutanée chez un chien pour le traitement d'une obstruction urétérale. L'urolithiase xanthique suspectée était secondaire à un traitement à l'allopurinol contre la leishmaniose. Le chien a d'abord présenté une léthargie, une anurie et des douleurs abdominales. L'analyse biochimique a révélé une légère azotémie et l'échographie abdominale a révélé une obstruction urétérale bilatérale. Une dérivation urétérale sous-cutanée a été mise en place selon une technique chirurgicale standard. Le chien s'est rétabli sans incident et l'azotémie a disparu en quelques jours. Des examens de suivi ont été effectués tous les trimestres pendant plus de trois ans et aucune complication telle qu'une obstruction du tube de dérivation, une infection urinaire ou une azotémie n'a été constatée au cours de cette période de suivi. L'allopurinol a été remplacé par de la dompéridone dans le cadre d'un traitement à long terme contre la leishmaniose, ce qui a entraîné une légère augmentation du titre des anticorps sériques contre la leishmaniose. La mise en place d'une dérivation urétérale sous-cutanée s'est avérée efficace et sûre chez ce chien et constitue une alternative intéressante en cas d'obstruction urétérale, y compris chez les chiens.

BACKGROUND: Various trochleoplasty techniques, including trochlear wedge recession (TWR) and trochlear block recession (TBR), are used to treat dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL). However, the objective outcomes of these surgical procedures are underreported. METHODS: Medical records were obtained for dogs weighing less than 10 kg that underwent either TWR or TBR and tibial tuberosity transposition to address grade I-III MPL. Long-term (at least 1 year after the last procedure) follow-up included orthopaedic and radiographic examinations, such as osteoarthritis score (OAS), ground reaction force (GRF) analysis and canine brief pain inventory (CBPI). RESULTS: Overall, 20 dogs (26 stifles) were followed up in the long term. Minor postoperative complications, medial patellar reluxation (MPR) and intermittent lameness occurred in 46.15%, 19.23% and 15% of the dogs, respectively. MPR occurred only in TWR-treated stifles, while mean OAS increased in all groups. Using the CBPI, the owners perceived an excellent or very good outcome in 95% of dogs. LIMITATIONS: The limitations of the study include its retrospective observational nature, a lack of randomisation and a small sample size. CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment resulted in a favourable outcome. GRF analysis could detect subtle differences in weight bearing in dogs treated for MPL, which might not be apparent clinically. There might be a higher risk for reluxation for TWR. However, a larger-scale prospective study would be required to find which treatment is superior.

Nasal mucosa tumors are an uncommon process and very dificult to work on with surgery. Radiotherapy associated or not with chemotherapy is the standard method to treat the disease. However, its access it is in the majority of the case not possible, making the surgery the best choice to try to achieve the patient's control. The anatomy of the region makes the complete surgical resection very difficult to achieve using the common and conventional blade scalpel surgery. The study features the advantages of using a CO2 laser to perform nasal mucosa carcinoma surgery in 6 dogs (N = 6). For the work we used an Aesculigth CO2 surgical laser model -Vetscalpel®, with the settings of 12Watts in a Superpulse mode, and a 0.25-0.4 mm focus to dissect the nasal mucosa, and a 1.5 mm focus for vaporization of the area. All the masses were histopathologically characterized as squamous cells carcinoma. The CO2 surgical laser allow us to work in a bloodless region promoting a more accurate dissection of the nasal mucosa sparing therefore the underlying and adjacent tissues and being less invasive. Also, it was possible to do the vaporization of the entire surgical area interviened. None of the patients presented relapse of clinical signs. Only 2 individuals were alive at the end of the study, presenting a survival rate of 420 and 514 days, which is in the same line of literature results of the treatment with radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy wich shows a median of 474-580 days. The study demonstrates successful outcomes with CO2 laser surgery in treating nasal mucosa SCC in dogs, with patients experiencing improved survival rates compared to traditional treatment methods. This highlights the efficacy and potential of CO2 laser surgery as a valuable tool in managing aggressive nasal tumors in veterinary oncology.

Background: Cardiac myxomas are benign tumours that can occur in any heart chamber or valve. They are extremely rare in dogs. We present a novel case involving a cardiac myxoma in the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) and a ventricular septal defect (VSD) in a small dog. Case Description: A female miniature dachshund (age, 7 months; weight, 2.88 kg) presented with growth insufficiency, lethargy, and a cardiac murmur. Echocardiography revealed a small polypoid mass in the LVOT and a membranous VSD. Simultaneous surgeries were performed to resect the mass (aortotomy) and close the VSD (right atriotomy) using low-flow cardiopulmonary bypass with surface-cooling hypothermia and retrograde cardioplegia. The tumour was histopathologically identified as a myxoma. The dog survived with no cardiac complications for 11 years after surgery. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this is the first report of ante-mortem diagnosis and simultaneous surgical repair of a cardiac myxoma obstructing the LVOT and a VSD in a small-breed dog. In addition to describing this complicated case, this report presents what we believe is the first reported use of retrograde cardioplegia during open-heart surgery in a small-breed dog.

Surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis (SAP) is widely used to reduce the risk of surgical site infections (SSI), but there is uncertainty as to what the proportion of SSI reduction is. Therefore, it is difficult for surgeons to properly weigh the costs, risks and benefits for individual patients when deciding on the use of SAP, making it challenging to promote antimicrobial stewardship in primary practice settings. The objective of this study was to map the veterinary evidence focused on assessing the effect of SAP on SSI development and in order to identify surgical procedures with some research evidence and possible knowledge gaps. In October 2021 and December 2022, Scopus, CAB Abstracts, Web of Science Core Collection, Embase and MEDLINE were systematically searched. Double blinded screening of records was performed to identify studies in companion animals that reported on the use of SAP and SSI rates. Comparative data were available from 34 out of 39123 records screened including: eight randomised controlled trials (RCT), 23 cohort studies (seven prospective and 16 retrospective) and three retrospective case series representing 12476 dogs and cats in total. Extracted data described peri- or post-operative SAP in nine, and 25 studies, respectively. In the eight RCTs evaluating SAP in companion animals, surgical procedure coverage was skewed towards orthopaedic stifle surgeries in referral settings and there was large variation in SAP protocols, SSI definitions and follow-up periods. More standardized data collection and agreement of SSI definitions is needed to build stronger evidence for optimized patient care.

Target trial emulation applies design principles from randomised controlled trials to the analysis of observational data for causal inference and is increasingly used within human epidemiology. Using anonymised veterinary clinical data from the VetCompass Programme, this study applied the target trial emulation framework to determine whether surgical (compared to non-surgical) management for cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture in dogs causes improved short- and long-term lameness and analgesia outcomes. The emulated target trial included dogs diagnosed with CCL rupture between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019 within the VetCompass database. Inclusion in the emulated trial required dogs aged ≥ 1.5 and < 12 years, first diagnosed with unilateral CCL rupture during 2019 and with no prior history of contralateral ligament rupture or stifle surgery. Dogs were retrospectively observed to have surgical or non-surgical management. Informed from a directed acyclic graph derived from expert opinion, data on the following variables were collected: age, breed, bodyweight, neuter status, insurance status, non-orthopaedic comorbidities, orthopaedic comorbidities and veterinary group. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was used to adjust for confounding, with weights calculated based on a binary logistic regression exposure model. Censored dogs were accounted for in the IPTW analysis using inverse probability of censoring weighting (IPCW). The IPCWs were combined with IPTWs and used to weight each dog's contribution to binary logistic regression outcome models. Standardized mean differences (SMD) examined the balance of covariate distribution between treatment groups. The emulated trial included 615 surgical CCL rupture cases and 200 non-surgical cases. The risk difference for short-term lameness in surgically managed cases (compared with non-surgically managed cases) was -25.7% (95% confidence interval (CI) -36.7% to -15.9%) and the risk difference for long-term lameness -31.7% (95% CI -37.9% to -18.1%). The study demonstrated the application of the target trial framework to veterinary observational data. The findings show that surgical management causes a reduction in short- and long-term lameness compared with non-surgical management in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Swelling of the perineal region in male dogs is most commonly caused by a perineal hernia. Clinical signs associated with perineal hernia are constipation, tenesmus or stranguria. This case report documents a rare cause of perineal swelling created by the growth of a malignant tumour leading to urethral obstruction and subsequent stranguria. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old neutered male German Shepherd was presented for swelling in the perineal region and stranguria for three days. Complete blood count and serum biochemistry were unremarkable. Ultrasound revealed a heterogeneous mass in the perineal region. Retrograde urethrography showed a severe narrowing of the urethra caudal to the pelvis. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass was highly suspicious for liposarcoma. Staging was performed by computed tomography (CT) of the thorax and abdomen. Total penile amputation in combination with pubic-ischial pelvic osteotomy, transposition of the remaining urethra through the inguinal canal, V-Y-plasty cranial to the prepuce and preputial urethrostomy were performed to remove the tumour. Histopathology confirmed a well-differentiated liposarcoma with complete histological margins. Six months after the surgery the dog was doing well and there were no signs indicating local tumour recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Wide surgical excision is generally recommended for soft tissue sarcomas, however this is sometimes not feasible for large tumours. In the case reported here, tumour resection was achieved by a combination of several surgical techniques with a good clinical outcome.

A 9-year-old male Labrador retriever dog was presented with dysphagia and presence of hairs on the tongue. Buccal examination revealed ulcerative glossitis and lingual hairs along the midline. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging of the tongue showed multiple hair shafts contained in a proliferative tissue along the midline and extending in a fistulous tract towards the right ventral aspect of the tongue at mid-length. Surgical excision was completed using a carbon-dioxide laser. Histopathological examination revealed a pyogranulomatous inflammation centered on growing hairs, confirming the diagnosis of glossitis and lingual hair heterotopia. At 10 mo after surgery, all clinical signs and glossitis had disappeared despite partial recurrence of hair on the dorsal sulcus and in the sublingual fistula. Hétérotopie pilaire linguale associée à une glossite pyogranulomateuse chez un chien labrador : traitement chirurgical à l'aide d'un laser au dioxyde de carbone. Un chien Labrador mâle entier de 9 ans est présenté pour une dysphagie et la présence de poils sur la langue. L'examen de la cavité buccale met en évidence une glossite sévère associée à des implantations pilaires. L'échographie et l'imagerie par résonance magnétique de la langue mettent en évidence de multiples poils contenus dans du matériel tissulaire s'étendant le long de la ligne médiane et présentant un trajet fistuleux vers la partie ventrale droite de la langue à mi-longueur de cette dernière. Une exérèse est réalisée à l'aide d'un laser au dioxyde de carbone. L'examen histopathologique de la pièce d'exérèse révèle une inflammation pyogranulomateuse centrée sur des poils en croissance, confirmant le diagnostic de glossite et d'hétérotopie pilaire linguale. Dix mois après la chirurgie, aucun signe clinique n'est réapparu et la glossite a disparu, malgré la récidive partielle de poils sur la partie dorsale de la langue et en région sublinguale droite.Message clinique clé : Bien que l'hétérotopie pilaire linguale n'ait généralement pas de répercussion clinique, les lésions ulcéreuses associées devraient justifier une imagerie et une biopsie.La résection de la lésion à l'aide d'un laser au dioxyde de carbone a donné de bons résultats dans ce cas, mais une pousse récurrente des poils est possible.(Traduit par les auteurs).

Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a rare congenital heart disease in dogs. Hemodynamically important interventricular defects must be closed to improve the prognosis. This case report describes successful interventional transcatheter closure of a muscular VSD in a young Maltese and poodle mixed-breed dog with a large muscular interventricular defect (~5 mm in diameter) with a high rate of left-to-right shunt flow. The VSD was closed with a customized Amplatzer-type VSD occluder via a percutaneous transvenous (jugular) approach. We concluded that interventional occlusion of a muscular VSD with an Amplatzer-type occluder is a viable treatment option for dogs. A regular follow-up study for this dog is ongoing and has not detected complications. Key clinical message: Interventional occlusion of a muscular VSD with an Amplatzer-type occluder is a viable treatment option for dogs.


Occlusion interventionnelle réussie d'une communication interventriculaire musculaire chez un chien. La communication interventriculaire (VSD) est une maladie cardiaque congénitale rare chez le chien. Les anomalies interventriculaires hémodynamiquement importantes doivent être fermées pour améliorer le pronostic. Ce rapport de cas décrit la fermeture interventionnelle réussie par cathéter d'un VSD musculaire chez un jeune chien de race mixte (maltais et caniche) présentant un défaut interventriculaire musculaire important (~5 mm de diamètre) avec un débit de shunt élevé de gauche à droite. Le VSD a été fermé avec un obturateur VSD personnalisé de type Amplatzer via une approche trans-veineuse percutanée (jugulaire). Nous avons conclu que l'occlusion interventionnelle d'un VSD musculaire avec un obturateur de type Amplatzer est une option de traitement viable pour les chiens. Here we report a case series of two dogs diagnosed as renal interstitial cell tumor (RICT) accompanied by elevated serum erythropoietin level and marked polycythemia. RICT is a rare tumor in dogs, originating from renal interstitial cells. While several renal tumors such as renal lymphoma, adenocarcinoma, carcinoma, sarcoma, fibrosarcoma and nephroblastoma may cause polycythemia, polycythemia caused by RICT has never been reported in dogs. The tumors in both dogs were solitary and lied within cortex or cortico-medullary junction. Histopathology revealed spindle-shaped cells suggesting mesenchymal origin, with no mitotic figures suggesting that the tumors in both dogs were benign. Following surgical removal of the affected kidney, serum erythropoietin level and polycythemia normalized in both dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of viscoelastic parameters along with Hct percentages, platelet numbers, and fibrinogen concentrations in healthy dogs undergoing elective stifle arthroscopy and tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO). These results determine if dogs are in a normal, hypocoagulable, or hypercoagulable state at 4 different time points. ANIMALS: Prospective study of 37 client-owned dogs enrolled between February 2, 2022, and November 10, 2022. METHODS: All dogs received a standardized anesthetic protocol. Patients enrolled in the study underwent stifle arthroscopy using a 3-portal technique with a TPLO performed by board-certified surgeons. Viscoelastic testing, Hct percentage, fibrinogen concentration, and platelet numbers were measured preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, 24 hours postoperatively, and 14 days postoperatively. RESULTS: Stifle arthroscopy and TPLO surgery was not associated with significant effects on viscoelastic coagulation monitoring and fibrinogen concentrations in healthy dogs when comparing the time points. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Humans have a high risk of thrombotic events when undergoing elective orthopedic surgery and are often placed on prophylactic antithrombotic medication prior to surgery. Viscoelastic coagulation monitoring in dogs undergoing similar orthopedic procedures has been evaluated in veterinary medicine, but the effects on platelets and fibrinogen concentrations from similar orthopedic procedures and uniform anesthesia protocols have not been documented. Cranial cruciate ligament insufficiency is the most common orthopedic injury in dogs. Treatment requires elective surgical correction for the best results and improved long-term prognosis. The findings of this study suggest that similar preoperative prophylactic antithrombotic intervention is not needed for canine patients.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical presentations, outcomes and complications associated with the use of dorsal transiliac locking plates to stabilise sacral fractures in dogs and cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-centre retrospective analysis of all patients that presented with sacral fractures between February 2017 and February 2023 that were managed surgically using paired dorsal transiliac locking plates. Twelve animals met the criteria for inclusion in a retrospective clinical case series. An owner questionnaire was employed to assess long-term outcomes. RESULTS: Eleven dogs and one cat with a mean age of 3.1 years (range 0.6 to 8.8) were included. Eleven patients presented following a motor vehicle accident and most were either non-ambulatory (n=8) or displayed severe unilateral hindlimb lameness (n=4). Nine sacral fractures were considered Anderson type II and three Anderson type V. The plate fixation was augmented with additional surgical stabilisation in 11 cases. Eleven patients were ambulatory at discharge and all cases healed uneventfully without major surgical or postoperative complications. Long-term follow-up (>60 days) was available in 10 animals at a mean of 694 days (range 65 to 1805) and owner-assessed outcomes via questionnaire were reported as good to excellent in all cases. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The application of transiliac locking plates provided sufficient stability to facilitate sacral fracture healing with minimal clinical complications. This method represents a robust and safe option to stabilise sacral fractures in dogs and cats, offering an alternative to iliosacral lag screw fixation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the recovery of limb function following a single intra-articular injection of platelet-rich plasma or hyaluronic acid in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture treated with tibial plateau levelling osteotomy compared to dogs receiving no injection intraoperatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-two dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture, body weights of 20 to 40 kg, and no other orthopaedic conditions were enrolled in this prospective, randomised, double-blind, controlled study at the small animal clinic at LMU Munich. All dogs underwent tibial plateau levelling osteotomy. Based on random allocation, they received either a single intra-articular injection of platelet-rich plasma, hyaluronic acid or no injection intraoperatively. Gait analysis, clinical examinations, radiography of the stifle joint for osteoarthritis progression and two validated owner questionnaires were compared among groups at three timepoints postoperatively (6 weeks, 3 and 6 months). Limb function was primarily assessed by measuring the ground reaction forces. RESULTS: At all times postoperatively, no differences were observed among groups regarding clinical examinations, osteoarthritis score values, ground reaction forces or owner questionnaires. All dogs showed significant improvement in limb function clinically, in all ground reaction forces and in the validated questionnaires. Osteoarthritis progressed minimally during rechecks in all dogs regardless of the additional injection or not. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: All dogs treated with tibial plateau levelling osteotomy for cranial cruciate ligament rupture showed improvements in limb function. No additive effect on faster recovery was demonstrated with the additional intra-articular injection of platelet-rich plasma or hyaluronic acid. Addition of platelet-rich plasma/hyaluronic acid injections during tibial plateau levelling osteotomy is unnecessary considering the lack of benefit observed up to 6 months postoperatively.

CASE HISTORY: Medical records from a single referral hospital (Davies Veterinary Specialists, Hitchin, UK) were reviewed to identify dogs (n = 8) with preputial cutaneous mast cell tumours (CMCT) that underwent surgical excision and primary preputial reconstruction, preserving the penis and urethra, after clients declined alternatives such as penile amputation and urethrostomy, from June 2017-June 2022. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Tumours had a median diameter of 21.5 (min 15, max 30) mm, were located cranioventrally (3/8), caudoventrally (1/8), laterally (2/8) and dorsally (2/8) relative to the prepuce and were diagnosed as CMCT based on cytology. No dogs had hepatic or splenic metastasis on cytology but inguinal lymph node metastasis was identified in 3/4 dogs sampled. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The owners of all dogs had declined penile amputation and scrotal urethrostomy. The CMCT were excised and primary reconstruction of the prepuce performed. Surgical lateral margins of 10, 20 or 30 mm were used and the deep margin excised the inner preputial lamina or underlying muscular fascia. The deep margin for caudoventral CMCT involved excision of the underlying SC adipose tissue. Preputial advancement was performed in 3/8 dogs to achieve adequate penile coverage. Histopathology confirmed all CMCT were Kiupel low grade, Patnaik grade II with complete margins in 6/8 dogs but identified metastasis only in one inguinal lymph node from one dog. Two dogs encountered minor complications (infection and a minor dehiscence) and one dog had a major complication (infection with major dehiscence). Median follow-up duration was 125 weeks, excluding one dog with 4 weeks of follow-up. None of the dogs experienced local recurrence or died of mast cell disease during the available follow-up period. CLINICAL RELEVANCE:  This clinical study evaluated a surgical alternative to penile amputation and advanced reconstructive techniques for Kuipel low/Patnaik grade II preputial CMCT when these procedures were declined by owners. Surgical excision of preputial CMCT with lateral margins of 10, 20 or 30 mm with primary preputial reconstruction is achievable with low morbidity and a good outcome when penile amputation and scrotal urethrostomy is not an option.

BACKGROUND: Readability of client communications is a commonly overlooked topic in veterinary medical education. In human medicine, it has been advised that the readability of patient materials should be at USA schooling sixth-grade level or below. We hypothesised that student written discharge instructions would be of an inappropriate readability level, and discharges scored with higher reading grade levels would be associated with more complications. METHODS: The cohort comprised 149 dogs and cats presenting for sterilisation. The readability of discharge instructions was assessed using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL) formulas. Records were examined for evidence of postoperative complications. RESULTS: The mean FRE score of the discharge instructions was 61.97, with 30.87% being classified as 'difficult' or 'fairly difficult', 60.4% as 'standard' and 8.72% as 'fairly easy'. The mean FKGL was 8.64, with 98% being above reading level 6. Overall, there was an association between FKGL and complication occurrence (p = 0.005). Stratification by species demonstrated FRE and FKGL to be associated with complication occurrence in dogs (FRE score, p = 0.038; FKGL, p = 0.002), but not cats (FRE score, p = 0.964; FKGL, p = 0.679). LIMITATIONS: Due to the retrospective nature of the study, there were difficulties associated with extracting relevant complication information from the medical records. CONCLUSION: Only 2% of owner-directed discharge instructions were written at readability levels aligning with the recommendations set forth in the human guidelines.

Endoscopy is widely used to remove gastric foreign bodies using grasping forceps and loop snares to manipulate and retrieve the foreign material. However, as not all foreign bodies can be removed using conventional endoscopic techniques, this case series describes the use of bottle liners for the removal of gastric foreign bodies in 12 dogs between 2020 and 2023. A 4 oz bottle liner (Drop-Ins) was placed at the end of the endoscope and pushed into the stomach. With the help of forceps introduced into the operating channel, the foreign body was pushed into the bottle liner. The bottle liner containing the foreign body was then extracted with the help of traction threads. The technique was used as the initial retrieval method in 5 dogs because of smooth (i.e., difficult to grasp) or sharp (i.e., that may damage the digestive tract mucosa during removal) foreign bodies and as a rescue procedure in 7 dogs. Foreign body retrieval was successful in all 12 dogs, with minor complications reported in 5 dogs (erosions and bleeding of the gastroesophageal sphincter). The use of a bottle liner represents an affordable alternative to gastrotomy when foreign bodies cannot be grasped with forceps or snares.

Two adult dogs were presented at 25 and 30 days following tibial external skeletal fixator placement (case 1) and tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (case 2), respectively. Clinical signs at presentation for each of them included acute onset lethargy, non-weight-bearing lameness, and hemorrhage at the surgical site with large hematoma formation. On admission, emergency whole blood transfusion was required in case 2 with a preoperative packed cell volume of 13%. Both dogs were diagnosed with pseudoaneurysm of the cranial tibial artery based on color Doppler ultrasonography. Additionally, computed tomography angiography was performed in one dog. Surgical treatment of the dogs included ligation of the cranial tibial artery supplying the pseudoaneurysm and curettage of hematoma. The surgery was completed without complications in case 1, but case 2 experienced inadvertent rupture of pseudoaneurysm with significant blood loss, which required another whole blood transfusion during the procedure. Both dogs had excellent functional recovery with no recurrence of clinical signs. We hypothesized that pseudoaneurysms were primarily caused by trauma secondary to placement of surgical implants or osteotomy. For orthopedic surgeons, it is important to recognize clinical signs of a potential tibial arterial pseudoaneurysm, as early surgical intervention may prevent loss of limb or life.
